Como Usar o Past Continuous em Inglês
O PAST CONTINUOUS, também chamado de Past Progressive, descreve uma ação que estava acontecendo em um certo período no passado.
O Past Continuous é formado pelo passado do verbo to BE (WAS / WERE) + verbo principal com -ing.
FORMA AFIRMATIVA:

Exemplos:
They were swimming. (Eles estavam nadando.)
A Forma Negativa do PAST CONTINUOUS é feita acrescentando-se NOT após WAS / WERE.

Ambas as formas são corretas e bastante comuns em inglês.

(Eles não estavam jogando futebol.)

O PAST CONTINUOUS é usado para:
1) Descrever uma ação em andamento num determinado momento no passado:
Exemplo:
At 9:00 a.m., he was taking a shower. (Às 9:00 da manhã, ele estava tomando banho.)
2) Narrar as circunstâncias de uma situação passada:
Exemplo:
It was a beautiful morning, the birds were singing in the trees. (Era uma linda manhã, os pássaros estavam cantando nas árvores.)
3) Descrever ações em andamento simultâneo. Nesses casos, geralmente usa-se a conjunção while:
Exemplo:
We were preparing our lunch while he was reading. (Nós estávamos preparando nosso almoço enquanto ele estava lendo.)
4) Indicar uma ação habitual que ocorria no passado. Normalmente usa-se os advérbios de frequência: always, never, often, etc. entre o passado simples do verbo to be e o verbo principal:
